BAPAN wants basketball league players insured

The Basketball Players Association of Nigeria has demanded an insurance scheme for all players in the professional basketball leagues in the country.

The new leadership of the association headed by the President, EjikeUgboaja, lamented that Nigerian basketball has been on a decline and blamed it on the infighting among those managing the game.

Ugboaja, who spoke to journalists at the National Stadium, Lagos called for unity in the Nigeria basketball family and urged all factions to work together to uplift leagues and the country’s national teams.

He said, “Starting from next season, we want all the players the national professional basketball leagues to be insured and most of the players should be going to school. If you are not a graduate, or you are not going to school, we don’t want you in the league.
“We are doing this so that in case of injuries the player will not become a nuisance in the street. Players must have insurance to play in the league because of injuries and players’ welfare should be improved.”
