Sunshine Stars have relinquished their lead at the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League after their goalless draw with IfeanyiUbah on Monday in one of the late matches of the Week 22 of the league at the Rojenny Stadium, Oba, Anambra State.
The Akure-Gunners, who have shown their
ambitions as one of the title contenders, could not breach the
IfeanyiUbah defence and thus trail Enyimba, who won their tie against
Lobi Stars 2-1 on Sunday, by a point on the table.
Enyimba lead the log with 41 points while Sunshine now have 40 points and Warri Wolves are third with 37 points.
Hosts, IfeanyiUbah, began the match the
brighter side and were offered an opportunity from the spot in the 28th
minute when Jolly Osas was fouled but new Super Eagles invitee,
Ikechukwu Ezenwa, saved the kick from Chibuzor Okonkwo.
The hosts kept pressurising the Sunshine defenders through Okonkwo and Osas but the first half ended in a barren draw.
The second half saw the visitors
attacking the hosts as the rains, which caused the match’s postponement
came down in sheets. Sunshine’s Ezenwa had to change his boots and
gloves in the 61st minute.
Tunde
Adeniji and Prince Aggrey threatened the hosts with the closest being
in the 85th minute when Adeniji flashed a header wide to end the match
goalless.
In the other rescheduled match, Rangers
drew 1-1 with Sharks. The match started in the 73rd minute, with Rangers
leading 1-0, was postponed from Sunday due to the waterlogged pitch of
the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Sharks came back with an equaliser in the 90th minute through Christian Pyagbara to earn a draw.
Rangers are now 10th in the log with 32 points while Sharks remain 17th with 22 points.
