No
fewer than 120 amateur golfers from across the country are expected to
vie for trophies at the Third Nigerian Breweries annual invitational
golf tournament hosted by the Abeokuta Golf Club.
The vice-captain of the AGC, Dr. Modupe
Famuyiwa, disclosed this in Abeokuta on Wednesday, while briefing
journalists on the event.
Famuyiwa said the event would afford the
amateur golfers the opportunity to test their skills and also interact
with their colleagues from other parts of the country.
“This amateur golf tournament started
three years ago. But this year, we want to make it prestigious, because
we have invited over 120 amateur golfers from across the country. The
tournament will be holding on Saturday, and winners will go home with
trophies,” he said.
Famuyiwa who represented the captain of
the club, Chief Olabode Mustapha, said the private sector and
individuals had played key roles in improving the game of golf.
He said the state government has been
supportive in the area of infrastructure and called on the Federal
Government to give golf the level of attention given to football.
“The government had always given support
to football. It is good, but it should extend that support to golf. We
need government’s support in the area of sponsorship, so that
professional golfers who earn their livelihood from the game could be
encouraged,” he said.
Famuyiwa revealed that the AGC would
host the Alake professional and amateur golf tournament in November for
the 10th year coronation ceremony, while the one for the Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo’s professional and amateur golf tournament will hold in
December.
