Edwin Okon, former Super Falcons’ head coach
Ex-international
Stella Mbachu has said the removal of Edwin Okon as the coach of the
Super Falcons was the climax of the problems of the team.
Mbachu, who played for the Falcons
between 1999 and 2014, told our correspondent during the week that poor
coaching was the major problem of the team.
She said, “I believe the Nigeria
Football Federation has a good plan for the Super Falcons because I
heard they will name a new coach for the team soon. Coaching is the
major problem Falcons have. When the team started having coaching
problem was when Okon was dropped and replaced him with his assistant
when they were preparing for the Olympics qualifiers and the All Africa
Games. That was what made their problems to get to this level.”
Mbachu
added that there was the need for the NFF to get a coach that can
rebuild the Falcons and reposition it to regain the number one spot in
Africa.
She said the coach could be foreign or Nigerian, but should preferably be female.
“The team really needs a new coach that
will rebuild the team. If they are getting a foreign coach, they should
also get Nigerians as assistant coaches, especially female coaches,”
Mbachu said.
“In the past three years or more, there
have been no female coaches in the team. That is not good. They can get a
foreign or local female coach to rebuild the Super Falcons and make the
team Africa’s number one again.”
