After the game, Watt, who had a sack of Dalton, was interviewed by ESPN’s Lisa Salters. He made a comment in jest about how the team’s mission was to stop Dalton and how they successfully executed that plan.
“Our goal was to come out here and make the Red Rifle look like a Red Rider BB gun, and I think we did that tonight,” Watt said of Dalton, referencing the quarterback’s nickname. “He’s a great player and they’re a great team, but tonight our coaches put together a great gameplan.”
At his news conference after the game, the Bengals quarterback was told about Watt’s remark and expressed his disappointment.
“So it’s disappointing for one of the best players in this league to say something like that. I think JJ’s a good player. For him to be one of the best in this league and to show that integrity, it shows what he’s about, and that’s disappointing.”
We’d ordinarily tell Dalton to chill out and not take the comment so harshly because it really wasn’t that bad, but we will give him a small pass. He was just told about the comments after losing and was upset, so he probably overreacted. He also was probably stung by being called a BB gun.
Watt, meanwhile, was probably just making a funny comment off the cuff and didn’t mean much. As we’ve seen before, the guy has said some absolutely hilarious lines before during games.
