Twenty one players have so far reported to the Super Eagles training
camp in Abuja ahead of next month’s CHAN in Rwanda, officials have said.
And the players have started training, under the supervision of
assistant coach, Salisu Yusuf and goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu.
Team official Patrick Pascal said last night they expected the other five invited players to join.
The absentees will include U23 stars Usman Mohammed and Bature Yaro as well as Rangers defender Matthew Etim, who only this past weekend got married.
Pascal further said they started training yesterday.
The squad are due to depart soon for South Africa before they will fly to Rwanda for the CHAN. Coach Sunday Oliseh who is still recovering from illness is managed only nine games for Chelsea this season.
Mikel also made just six starts in Chelsea’s Premier League title-winning campaign last year due to being pushed to the sidelines by first-choice defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic.
And according to Turkish outlet Takvim, Galatasaray are now planning to make contact with Chelsea in the coming days to try and agree a fee for the 28-year-old. Mikel who places in the Super Eagles has come under threat.
Mikel’s current deal with the Blues runs until 2017 but the club are unlikely to offer him a new one and could take advantage of Galatasaray’s interest next month.
Fellow Turkish side Besiktas have also registered their interest in signing the midfielder, with club president Fikret Oman admitting that they could come back in for the player they tried to sign in the summer.
“We were ready to sign Mikel last summer. And we could enter the race again over the winter break,” Oman said.
