But Etebo completed a brace just before half-time to help Nigeria to the roof of Africa.
We all feel a great frustration, as we are aware that we came close to achieving a feat. But we handed our opponents the victory,” Schurmann lamented after the match.
The goals Nigeria scored, we gave it to them. At this level, you pay the price for your mistakes.
We had a poor start, but we came back into the match, we equalized and even took control. But we missed the penalty as well as many other chances.
I am frustrated because we could have done much better. But I am pleased with my team and my players. We have to congratulate them.”
Algeria U-23 will, however, compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio alongside Nigeria and third-placed South Africa.
