The 49ers open up their 2015 preseason campaign against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
For San Francisco, this will provide the first glimpse into a 49ers team that went through a slew of coaching and personnel changes this offseason. Head coach Jim Tomsula's squad will have to answer plenty of questions with the regular season just around the corner.
San Francisco went up against Houston in both teams' initial preseason contest, and the game kicked off at 8 p.m. ET.
Houston got on the board first with a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brian Hoyer to wide receiver Cecil Shorts. And the Texans followed up with a converted two-point attempt, which gave Houston an early lead.
The Texans nearly scored again late in the first. But a standout goal-line defense kept Houston out of the end zone.
San Francisco answered back early in the second quarter with an impressive drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blaine Gabbert to tight end Garrett Celek. Running back Jarryd Hayne set up the play with a 53-yard breakaway run.
Hayne and Gabbert also helped spark another drive before the half that resulted in a 37-yard field goal from kicker Phil Dawson.
Houston took the lead in the third quarter after a 10-yard pass found rookie wideout Jaelen Strong—a receiver that many wanted to see in a 49ers uniform this season. The Texans defense then followed up the offense's efforts with a safety on rookie quarterback Dylan Thompson.
A field goal from kicker Randy Bullock extended Houston's lead to 10 midway through the fourth quarter. He followed up with another with a minute remaining in regulation.
That lead held as the Texans knocked off the 49ers in this opening week of the preseason.
