The
Port Harcourt Regional Championships of the ongoing 5th Airtel Rising
Stars U-17 football tournament has kicked off at Liberation Stadium.
Matches among the boys’ and girls’ teams
from Imo, Rivers, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom and Anambra states began on Thursday
and will end on Saturday.
Lagos will host the last leg of regional
championships at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Lagos, between
August 14 and 16. The Lagos region will have participants from Ogun,
Oyo, Lagos, Ondo and Edo states.
The Benue State boys’ team and the
girls’ team from Plateau state emerged as winners from the Abuja
Regional Championship last Saturday. Both teams will represent the
norther region in the national finals.
Airtel’s Regional Operations Director,
North, Wole Abu; Zonal Business Manager, North Central, Lynda Umeh; and
Regional Trade Marketing Manager, North, Nasihu Abdulmajid, presented
the awards to the winners at the Abuja Regional finals.
Champions from the north, south and west
regions will meet at the national finals in Lagos and vie for the
Airtel Rising Star Season 5 trophy.
Ex-internationals
Jonathan Akpoborie, Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal and Ann Chiejine are
serving as technical advisers for the tournament at the regional
championships to offer technical support and advisory services to the
players.
